When life gets genuinely heavy, a hospitalization, a death, a stretch where the anxiety just will not come down, the usual advice runs out fast. Sleep more. Go for a walk. Breathe. All true, all hard to do when you are in it.

This site is about two kinds of sound that some people find help. They ask almost nothing of you. You put headphones on and you listen. There is no practice to learn, no discipline to keep up, and nothing to get right.

They are two different things. They get mixed up with each other constantly, including on the videos that carry their names, so it helps to know which one you have.

Before any of that, there is breathing

If what you want is to settle down in the next ten minutes, the highest-yield thing on this page is not audio at all.

Breathing slowly, around six breaths a minute, reliably and immediately changes heart-rate variability, a measurable sign that the body’s calming branch has become more active. It is one of the most consistently replicated findings in the relaxation literature. Whether it makes you feel calmer is a smaller and less certain effect, and it would be dishonest to promise it.

Of the three things on this site, slow breathing has the most certain mechanism, needs no equipment at all, and has been tested across the widest range of people. That is why it comes first.

You may have read warnings about breathwork. Those mostly concern fast, forced techniques, which this is not. Slow breathing runs the other way: versions of it are used clinically to treat panic disorder, and it is part of standard care for asthma and COPD.

If focusing on your breath makes you light-headed or short of air, ease off and breathe normally. It usually settles.

The two techniques

Binaural beats. Two steady tones play at the same time, one in each ear, tuned slightly apart. Your hearing cannot keep them separate, so it produces a third thing: a slow pulse that is not in the recording at all. It sits in the middle of your head and throbs. Nothing moves.

Bilateral audio. A sound alternates back and forth between your ears. Left, right, left, right, usually about once a second. Something clearly travels across your head.

That is the whole distinction, and it is most of what you need.
